Showing Movies?

Copyrighted motion pictures and other audiovisual programs that are available for rental or purchase in any legal format, such as DVDs and other digital formats, whether streamed or downloaded, are intended for personal, private use only.

Showing movies in communal areas of a senior living or health care community, such as within a lounge, theater, or living room, requires a public performance license. In addition, programming movies on a dedicated closed circuit television system channel, requires a public performance license.

Civil penalties for unauthorized exhibitions start at $750 for each inadvertent infringement and go as high as $150,000 for each egregious violation. By comparison, an annual Umbrella License is a fraction of the cost and ensures copyright compliance for the entire campus.
